Hounds Bats Fall Silent to Weller, Snipes

By:

The Hounds fell to the mercy of Snipes starter Kyle Weller, who took a no-hitter into the 9th inning and finished with a complete-game, two-hit gem in Lexington’s 4-2 win on Wednesday night. The loss was DuPage County’s second in a row after winning their first seven to start the year.

Weller, of Parkland Community College, allowed just two runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks. He struck out 11 Hounds over 132 pitches.

Alex Cain broke up Weller’s no-no in the top of the 9th with a leadoff double. After two quick outs, Brian Lees singled home Cain to cut the Snipes lead to 4-2. After Drew Sterioti drew a walk, Drew LaComb struck out swinging to end the night at Lexington’s High Desert Field.

The Hounds (7-2) kept it close thanks in part to five Lexington errors on the night. Two of them led to the game’s first run in the top of the 5th inning. DuPage’s Mike Roberson and Adam Wilson each reached on infield errors, and Roberson scored from third on a Weller balk. The Hounds would put another runner aboard in the frame after another error but could score no more.

The Snipes (4-2) tied the game in the bottom of the 5th after Hounds starter Patrick Bellinger gave up a single and three walks, the last of which to Adam Casson plated Jake Capco. Matt Frawley then came on in relief and forced Eric Phillis to ground out to first, ending the threat. Bellinger finished with 4.2 innings of one-run, four-hit, four-walk, three-strikeout ball.

Jeff Cardenas led off the bottom of the 7th with a double off Frawley and scored on Matthew James’s RBI single, giving Lexington a late 2-1 lead. Cardenas again played the hero in the bottom of the 8th with a two-run base hit to extend the Snipe lead to 4-1. Drew LaComb made his first relief appearance of the season by retiring the last two Snipes of the night.

The Hounds are back on the road tomorrow night as they face the Chicago Zephyrs in Sugar Grove. Game time is 5:30 at Waubonsee Community College.
